A Day Trip to Bezirgan Village from Kalkan

The lusciously green Bezirgan Village is just a short distance from the coastal town of Kalkan up in the Taurus Mountains. The peaceful village offers visitors a glimpse into traditional Turkish rural life, rich history, and beautiful landscapes.

Whether you're looking to explore historical sites, enjoy a peaceful hike, or indulge in local flavours, Bezirgan is a perfect day-trip destination.

A Brief History of Bezirgan Village

Bezirgan has a long history that dates back to ancient times. The village sits on a fertile plateau that was historically used as an important agricultural hub. It is believed that Bezirgan was once part of the Lycian civilisation, serving as a key settlement in their mountainous regions. Due to its strategic location, the village played a role in trade and agriculture throughout the centuries.

The village's name, "Bezirgan," is derived from the Turkish word for "merchant," hinting at its history as a trading post. Over time, the village evolved into a quiet farming community, preserving much of its traditional charm.

Today, its fertile plains are still used for farming, and the old storage buildings (known as "ambarlar") used by past generations are still standing, providing visitors with a window into the area's agricultural heritage.

In the summertime, many of the local residents of the coastal towns of Kalkan and surrounding, migrate up to Bezirgan village for the long hot summer months to escape the heat and humidity. There is no need for air-conditioning here, the temperature further up the mountains away from the coastline can become so crisp and cool, particularly in the evenings, many locals sleep with a blanket!

Things to Do in Bezirgan

1. Explore the Traditional Grain Storage Buildings (Ambarlar)

The iconic wooden grain storage huts, or "ambarlar," are a highlight of Bezirgan. These stilted structures have been used for centuries to store grain and other produce, protecting them from pests. Walking around these traditional buildings offers a fascinating insight into the region's agricultural history.

2. Visit the Village Mosque

Bezirgan’s mosque (Cami) is a key gathering place for the local community. While modest in size, it reflects the simplicity and traditional architecture of rural Turkish villages. Visitors are welcome to stop by and appreciate its peaceful ambience.

3. Hike the Lycian Way

Bezirgan is located along the famous Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail that stretches along the Mediterranean coast. From Bezirgan, you can join the trail and hike towards other scenic points, such as Kalkan or the ancient city of Xanthos. The route from Bezirgan to Kalkan offers stunning views of the countryside, with the Taurus Mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop. It’s a great activity for those seeking outdoor adventure and breathtaking scenery.

4. Stroll Through the Plateau

The Bezirgan plateau, with its rolling hills and fertile fields, is a tranquil spot for a leisurely walk. The landscape is dotted with small farms, orchards, and vineyards, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect escape from the busier tourist areas of the coast.

Visiting the Mosque

If you plan to visit the village mosque, it's essential to dress modestly out of respect for local customs. Visitors should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. Women are also expected to cover their heads when entering the mosque, so bringing a scarf is recommended. Always remove your shoes before entering the mosque.

Additionally, it's best to avoid visiting during Friday prayer time, which typically occurs after midday. The mosque will be busier with locals attending the important weekly prayers, and it's respectful to give them space during this time.
