Explore Gombe Green Lake and Ucarsu Waterfall

Nestled in the serene plains of the Taurus Mountains, the traditional Anatolian town of Gombe (Gum-beh) in Antalya is a haven for nature lovers. Gombe offers a refreshing escape from the bustling coastal towns, among its most captivating attractions are the Green Lake (Yesilgol) and Ucarsu Waterfall (Ooh-char-soo), both of which promise an unforgettable experience.

Discovering the Green Lake (Yesilgol)

A jewel amidst the mountains, Green Lake, or Yesilgol, is a stunning emerald-green body of water situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters. The lake is surrounded by dense pine forests and towering peaks, creating a tranquil and otherworldly atmosphere from the scorching hot turquoise Mediterranean coastlines. The vibrant colour of the lake is attributed to the rich mineral content of its waters and the surrounding lush vegetation, which reflects in the sunlight.

Getting There:

Reaching Green Lake requires a bit of effort but is well worth it. From Kalkan, you’ll meander up towards the mountainous landscapes in the direction of Elmali and it is about 1.5 hours. Along the way, you'll pass through traditional Turkish villages, giving you a glimpse of the local culture and lifestyle. If you are hiring a car, make sure to fill up with fuel beforehand as the nearest petrol station is just before Green Lake.

Many local tour companies provide a jeep safari to Gömbe’s Green Lake and Ucarsu Waterfall, including a guide and lunch for the day. If you like the sound of a 4x4 mountain drive journey and to fully immerse yourself in the history and culture of Anatolian life, then a jeep safari may just be the day out you are looking for. The Kalkan Villas team can organise a day for you. Make sure to give several days' notice to ensure availability.

The Majestic Uçarsu Waterfall

A short distance from Green Lake lies the majestic Ucarsu Waterfall. The name "Ucarsu" translates to "Flying Water," and it’s easy to see why. The waterfall cascades down from a height of about 50 meters, creating a misty veil that cools the surrounding air. The water is sourced from the melting snow of Akdag (White Mountain), ensuring a steady flow throughout the year.

From Green Lake, a well-marked trail leads to Ucarsu Waterfall. The hike is relatively easy and takes about 30-45 minutes.

Gombe Town Centre

Visit the town centre of Gombe famous for Kar Serbeti (Snow Sherbert) with its colourful selection of locally produced icecreams and sorbets. The favourite flavour amongst locals is Yanik Dondurma, made from goat's milk, it has a unique and distinctive smoked flavour. Nearby, you can try your best haggling skills at the local Pazar shopping area where you can find clothing, bags, textiles and souvenirs.

What to Pack for the Day

-Clothing: Pack practical and comfortable clothes for the hike towards Ucarsu and clothes you don’t mind getting wet if you are going to brave the icy cold waters of the Waterfall’s streams. Gombe is a more traditional town so you may want to bring something to cover or change it which is a little more conservative.

-Footwear: Sturdy footwear for the Green Lake and Ucarsu that you don't mind getting wet, there may be slippery points near the waterfall.

- Sunscreen and hats: Don’t be fooled by the icy cold lake and waters and the cooler temperatures in the mountains. The higher altitude can just as easily cause sunstroke so take it easy with shade, headgear, sun protection and plenty of water.

A trip to Green Lake and Uçarsu Waterfall in Gombe, Antalya, is a journey into the heart of nature. The emerald waters of the lake, the majestic waterfall, and the serene surroundings offer a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
