Exploring Saklikent Canyon, Gizlikent Waterfall and Yakapark

Kalkan is a picturesque coastal town known for its stunning bays and Turquoise coastline but it also boasts proximity to some of Turkey's most breathtaking natural attractions. Among these are the famous Saklikent Gorge Canyon, the enchanting Gizlikent Waterfall and the delightful Yakapark. Each destination offers a unique experience that caters to adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

The Majestic Saklikent Gorge Canyon

Located approximately 50 km from Kalkan, and nestled within the luscious Pine forests of the Taurus Mountains, Saklikent Gorge Canyon, meaning "Hidden City" in Turkish, is one of the deepest canyons in the world. The canyon stretches about 18 km in length and reaches depths of up to 300 meters. As the snow melts over winter and springtime the streaming icy water flows down to the Lycian Xanthos River and is refreshingly cold even in the summer heat.

We suggest leaving just after 09:00 from Kalkan and arriving at Saklient for 10:00.

Activities in Saklikent Canyon

Hiking and Trekking: The primary activity at Saklikent is hiking through the narrow gorge. The hike can be challenging, especially in parts where you must wade through icy cold water and navigate over slippery rocks. However, the stunning views and the thrill of the adventure make it all worthwhile.

River Rafting: For those looking for a more adrenaline-pumping experience, river rafting is available. Floating down the fast-flowing waters of the canyon is an exhilarating way to experience its beauty.

Zipwiring: Take a birds-eye view over the Xanthos River and Saklikent Valley.

A Hidden Gem: Gizlikent Waterfall

A short 10-minute drive from Saklikent Canyon is the enchanting Gizlikent Waterfall, a hidden spot that offers a more serene experience compared to the bustling activity of the canyon. "Gizli" means "hidden" in Turkish, and this secluded waterfall lives up to its name.

Activities at Gizlikent Waterfall

Nature Walks: The path to Gizlikent Waterfall is a beautiful nature walk through a lush forest. It’s less strenuous than the hike through Saklıkent Canyon, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll amidst nature.

Swimming: The cool, refreshing pool at the base of the waterfall is an ideal spot for a swim, especially on a hot day. The water is crystal clear and surrounded by greenery, offering a perfect natural retreat.

Relaxation and Meditation: The serene environment of Gizlikent is perfect for relaxation and meditation. The calming sounds of the waterfall and the rustling leaves create a peaceful atmosphere ideal for unwinding.

Before Visiting:

Footwear: Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear with good grip for both locations. The rocks can be slippery, especially in the canyon.

Clothing: Quick-drying clothes and swimwear are recommended as you’ll likely get wet in the canyon and possibly at the waterfall.

Safety: Always follow safety guidelines and instructions from guides. The terrain can be challenging, and safety should be a priority.

Time of Visit: Both attractions are best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, especially during the summer months.

Hydration and Snacks: Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep your energy levels up during your explorations.

Transition to Tranquility at Yakapark

The short drive, approx. 20 mins, from the waterfall further up the mountainous countryside to Yakapark is scenic and enjoyable, making it an easy transition from the bustling scene to the serene. Plan to arrive at Yakapark for lunch around 12:30-13:00 to fully enjoy the afternoon in this tranquil setting.

Upon arrival at Yakapark, you'll be greeted by the soothing sounds of bubbling streams, cascading waterfalls and local Trout fish swimming on the bar. The park's shaded, verdant surroundings create a peaceful ambience, inviting you to relax and unwind.

Dining in Nature

Yakapark's on-site restaurant is renowned for its delicious, locally sourced Turkish cuisine. Tables are set up around the natural pools and mini waterfalls to enjoy your meal with the added pleasure of a stunning natural backdrop. The restaurant's open-air setting allows you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of your surroundings while savouring your lunch.

Menu Highlights

Freshly Caught Trout: One of the restaurant's specialities is freshly caught trout, grilled to perfection. The trout is sourced from the park's own streams, ensuring a fresh and delicious meal.

Meze Platters: Start your meal with a selection of mezes—small, flavorful dishes that are perfect for sharing. Favourites include hummus, stuffed grape leaves, and eggplant salad, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients.

Traditional Turkish Cay: No meal in Turkey is complete without a cup of traditional Turkish tea. Enjoy it alongside your meal or as a relaxing post-lunch treat while you take in the tranquil surroundings.
